Today I’m sharing some photos from a Fungi Foray in the New Forest day hosted by John Wright that I booked myself on following a day at Summer Fair. I was a truly informative and enlightening day and it’s really given me a taste for getting out into the forest and finding more fungi to identify.
John not only shared his wisdom but also his beer, wine and homemade tipples, bread and cheese and homemade cake, gorgeous honey & almond cake and choclate brownie with walnut cakes made by his wife the evening before. We spent a part of the morning and afternoon spotting and collecting fungi in two baskets – one for edible and one for non-edible. Non-edible doesn’t necessarily means poisonous, but also fungi that taste bitter or tough. At the end of the day we arranged the in-edible fungi on John’s ‘Show & Tell’ table where they were labelled. The edible ones were arranged on the grass, double checked to ensure they really were edible and then prepped and fried in butter with salt and pepper. Delicious and very satisfying. Informal and friendly I would recommend this foray to anyone!
If you are interested in a foraging course, be it fungi, beach or hedgerow foraging you can find out more about the days John hosts and book them over at his website.
